Welcome readers | Jeffrey Coolwater here
I LIVE in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I was born there on June 23rd, 1951. After an unremarkable childhood and adolescence which I may review someday, I began booking musicians as an AF of M licensed talent agent at the age of 22 (I’d played tuba in school and guitar through my teens but found my slow rate of improvement frustrating and gave up to promote others more manually dexterous than myself). After 6 years my hopes of bringing Peace to the world through music were dashed. I was very disenchanted with the “business” of entertainment and left it behind. I spent the following 30+ years of my life working in National Television News (without editorial input) as a Broadcast Video Tape and DTV Ingest Technician before retiring in 2009. I’ve had the absolute privilege and pleasure of living with 2 black and white cats, Jennie and Michael, whom I rescued in 1995 and 1997 respectively. They have always been my constant companions, my children, my teachers, and my inspiration. [Update: Sadly, Michael passed away on January 8, 2011 at the approximate of sixteen, seven months after a Lymphoma diagnosis. I wrote this brief entry on the first anniversary of his diagnosis. I will write more detail of him someday, but the grief is still too great.]
MY ANIMAL RIGHTS ADVOCACY is a personal passion that has grown out of my transition from a base Omnivore to an ethical Abolitionist Vegan beginning around the time of my Father’s death from Lymphoma in 1991 (my Mother died in 1979 from complications of late onset diabetes). This entry explains how I feel about my transition. In any case I began to feel my respect for Jennie and Michael as individuals was nothing more than what all animals deserved. I realized those animals we call “Pets” were no different than all the other animals we’ve domesticated and bred for food. Thanks to centuries of our manipulation they are all now unnatural species and dependent upon us for survival. There really is no moral distinction between those we “love” as family members and those we “farm.” And so all deserve a special commitment that charges us with the responsibility of adopting and caring for those “companion animals” that already exist while discouraging bringing others into existence…
AND FURTHERMORE, AS A VEGAN, I strongly support and strive to teach the Abolition of ALL animal use be that use for food, entertainment, clothing, experimentation, etc. The speciesist view of life that we are raised with must change if we are to evolve further. Gary Francione has said, and I paraphrase here, “We must create a new social paradigm in which animals are no longer held as ‘property’ or thought of as ‘things’.” And so it follows logically that practicing Veganism becomes “a moral baseline”—the single greatest, most influential, and EASIEST direct action one can take for ALL animals and the environment.
MY BLOG HERE HAS EVOLVED as an outgrowth of this philosophical awareness not only to illustrate animal exploitation but to influence its end. I want to help readers understand that the popular notion of animal welfare as a benefit to animals is a delusion. Animal welfare offers nothing beneficial for animals since welfare regulations have historically been designed solely to protect animal enterprise, ensuring maximum economic efficiency while creating a “humane” illusion that leads to greater and greater consumption. And this continues to be the case. I want readers to know we have a moral and social obligation to abolish animal use by eliminating demand for the products of such exploitation in what we eat, wear, use, and otherwise participate in and to educate others of this, in creative and nonviolent ways, as well.
I HUMBLY ASK before you consider donating to ANY Animal Welfare or pseudo “Rights” organization, that you instead research how easy it is to end animal exploitation in your lives by simply becoming Vegan. And then find ways to support nonviolent, grassroots Vegan education initiatives. These are indeed, the most effective ways for you to help animals and advance the Peace movement.
